With dozens of  peaks along the sandbanks, it is probably the most versatile places to Surf in Canarian Islands. You can find easy spilling whitewater waves and reforms,  steep drops, mainly sand but also a short strip of submerged reef. Slope and shape of the beach makes it the perfect place to learn Surfing,

KEYNOTES

The Lessons

The changing wave conditions caused by the shift of the tides divide “Beginner and Intermediate” Surfers from the “Advanced”. We always meet 15 minutes prior to the lesson to get suited and walk down to the beach in time. Similar to the lesson-content, its structure is modular. The Session starts with a briefing and a Warm-Up. Instruction, exercise and practice in the water are a constant cycle through out the session. The group decides if they want to finish with a stretching or surf till the very end of the session. I recommend stretching, but I understand if you opt for surfing.

Time in the Water

Depending on the level and the number of attendees in a session the total lesson duration is between 2 and 3 hours. We spend about 2/3 of the lesson in the Water and 1/3 at the Beach distributed in intervals of instruction and exercise on land and practice in the water.

Individual Coaching

Privat Surf Lessons Intermediate Advanced Famara Lanzarote

I plan each lesson separately from day to day, taking care for  appropriate contents, exercise and volume for each participant. When you book with me, I ask you about your personal goals and to fill a form with information about you, including your surf level and physical stats, to plan your first session. The Lesson Agenda is always flexible and adaptable, corresponding to individual progress and issues throughout the session. (it is not Day 1/Lesson A, Day 2/Lesson B, Day 3/Lesson C....)

Power and Endurance

In a surf lesson we work on the technical skills and on understanding the interaction and Dynamics of Body, Board and Wave. The more power and endurance you have, the easier it gets to take these skills into practice. You will get a board and learn techniques that match your fitness. If you want improve strength through surfing it will take a long time. Though each session will have a positive effect on endurance, it is more efficient to train endurance and strength separately. Especially for all landlocked surfer that is important to acknowledge. One or two weeks are too short to expect really notably changes, unless you train really disciplined in- and outside the water, with training days and recovery days. The best is to implement a surf-workout in your daily life, even if its only 15 minutes a day. If you already do – perfect.

Videos and Fotos

Videos and photos are perfect to analyse where theres potential to improveand monitor your progress.  The camera is always part of the session.

Surfskating

The best you can do to train maneuvers and skills when you are landlocked or the surf conditions are not inviting. Practice over and over again the same maneuver till perfection, or just skate for fun.

Safety

As any sport, surfing has some risks involved. That doesn´t mean surfers live in constant fear: Crossing a road, you don't think you each time “Oh my got I gonna die, if I don't look left and right”, do you? You have gotten used to be aware when crossing a road throughout your life, and it has become a subconscious automated process. Ideally we achieve the same in surfing. Therefore safety is one of the first things that we will talk about in your first lesson. Context- and condition-related safety-reminders are part of any lesson.

The Format

The Timeframe is set by the Tide and average endurance and receptivity. Small groups contribute to efficiency and attention. Compared with larger groups we are more dynamic moving between beach and water, saving time for surf and exercise. There is less distraction within the group and in the water less competition for waves. More surf, more practice.

Style

background knowledge surfing famara lanzarote

The Lesson is a workshop. Everybody is working on his own "masterpiece" with my guidance. Some individual issues are interesting for the entire group, others afford individual attention. In- and outside the water.

The Methods

surf lessons famara lanzarote balance

Classic Surf instruction combined  with principles of Personal Training, preparing self-perception, reaction and motor skills. Interactive exercises and  instruction at the Beach turn dry explanations into a educational game of skill. Facts about balance and dynamics of board body and water become litterally palpable.

Flexibility

surf flexibility famara lanzarote

The Warm arm up always contains some flexibility exercise. Flexibility and power make everything feel easier. Transformation needs time and repetition. Like power and endurance, the best is to add agility to a regular workout routine.

Coordination, Balance, Motor Skill

Either you have them already or you will develop them with surfing. If you have them already it will accelerate your progress.

Efficiency

We have a limited time-frame given by the tides. Throughout the lesson receptivity and power are decreasing. The  Framework is designed to get the most out of the time, by managing energy resources and receptivity. Keeping the learning-curve high and preserving energy until the end of the Session.

In surfing many things contribute to efficiency in many ways. The better technique, feeling and understanding dynamics, the less energy wasted,. the more fun.

Flow

In Psychology the term describes a state of total immersion into a topic or task. Concentration leads to success, success creates joy and joy stimulates receptivity and power, leading to even more success. And the result is even more joy. A virtuous cycle.

Mindset

To get into flow, you need to focus on the right thing in the right moment. In surfing those moments are fast, and usually there are multiple things to focus on at the same time. First step to get that Mindset: Relax, don't stress yourself. Focus on one thing at a time and keep things simple in the beginning. “It is all about where your mind is at.” - Kelly Slater
